Funeral Mass for Sister Rebecca Jane Nolan, OP (Order of Preachers), 80, who died Saturday, June 13 at the Mohun Health Care Center, will be celebrated Tuesday, June 30 at the Motherhouse of the Dominican Sisters of Peace, followed by burial at St. Joseph Cemetery.
She was born on Oct. 20, 1945 in Pittsburgh to Michael and Mildred (Grant) Nolan.
She received a license in practical nursing in 1967 from Courter Technical College in Cincinnati, certification as a registered nurse in 1976 at St. Francis School of Nursing in Pittsburgh, a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing in 1982 from Capital University, and a Master of Science degree in nursing administration and education in 1992 from New York University.
She entered the congregation of the Dominican Sisters of St. Mary’s of the Springs (now the Dominican Sisters of Peace) in 1963 and professed her vows on Aug. 15, 1966, taking the name Sister Demertrius.
She served as a nurse, administrator, adjunct professor and in parish ministry, spending most of her career in the Diocese of Columbus at the Mohun Center from 1963 to 1974 and 1976 to 1979, with the Dominican Sisters of the Sick Poor from 1982 to 1989, and as director of church partnerships for Mount Carmel Health from 1994 to 2005.
She also spent extended periods in health care facilities in Cincinnati and the South Bronx, New York, and served in Pittsburgh from 2005 to 2006 before returning to the Mohun Center.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Michael. Survivors include a brother, Conrad, and sisters, Milicent Nolan, Christine Simmons and Sharon.
