Deacon Richard L. Baumann
Funeral Mass for Deacon Richard L. Baumann, 92, who died Wednesday, Feb. 11, was celebrated Monday, Feb. 16 at Columbus Our Lady Victory Church. Burial will take place later.
He was born on Nov. 15, 1933 to Herman and Catherine (Haley) Baumann, graduated from Columbus St. Charles Preparatory School and studied at the University of Notre Dame and Xavier University in Cincinnati.
He was ordained a deacon by Bishop Edward Herrmann at Columbus St. Joseph Cathedral on June 6, 1976 and served at Our Lady of Victory Church from then until his retirement from active ministry in 2007. His ministries also included the Cursillo movement, Teens Encounter Christ, Marriage Encounter and adult Catholic education.
He went to work for his father’s plumbing business at age 15 and eventually became its president. After retiring from that business, he was a parish administrator at St. Mary, Mother of God Church in Columbus’ German Village neighborhood and Our Lady of Victory.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Nikki Baumann Hester. Survivors include his wife, Kathleen (Mowery); sons, Mark (Kathy), Greg (Kim) and Jeff; daughters, Kathi (David) Whisler, Vicki (Kevin) Rush, Lori (Jim) Yahner, Marci Ryan and Cindi (Charles) Hackney; sisters, Annie Upper and Susan Hochanadel; and grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Deacon Charles A. Knight
Funeral Mass for Deacon Charles A. Knight, 92, who died Thursday, Jan. 29, was celebrated Friday, Feb. 6 at Marysville Our Lady of Lourdes Church. Burial was at Holy Cross Cemetery, Pataskala.
He was born on Sept. 16, 1933 in Brooklyn, New York to Charles and Theresa (Scafidi) Knight. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry, served in the U.S. Coast Guard for two years and earned a Master’s degree in chemistry from the City College of New York.
He was a chemist for a flavor and fragrance company, then was employed by the Nestle Co., which transferred him in 1980 to its plant in Marysville, where he spent the rest of his life.
He was ordained to the diaconate for the Archdiocese of New York on Feb. 11, 1978 at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City. He served as a deacon at Precious Blood Church in Walden, New York, and continued his service after moving at Our Lady of Lourdes Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Josephine (DeLorenzo) and a brother, Paul. Survivors include his sons, Dr. Charles (Marla); Michael and Steven; a daughter, Karen (Michael) Scotti; a brother, Gerard; a sister, Theresa; and a grandson.
Rita J. Brindley
Funeral Mass for Rita J. Brindley, 91, who died Tuesday, Jan. 13, was celebrated Monday, Jan. 19 at Dennison Immaculate Conception Church. Inurnment was at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Dennison.
She was born on Sept. 26, 1934 in Lewisville, Ohio, to Harry and Mary (Lopeman) Busch Pickens.
She was a 1952 graduate of Dennison St. Mary’s High School and was on its alumni committee.
She served as Immaculate Conception Church secretary for 10 years, was a
member of its school board and Altar Society and was the longtime deputy clerk for the Village of Dennison.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jack; brothers, Harry Busch, Karl Busch, Bill Busch, Harold Busch and Thomas Pickens, and sister, Janet Bargar. Survivors include her sons, Jack (Pam), Robert (Lisa), Richard (Beth) and Jeffrey (Kathy); daughters, Brenda Long and Susan (Randy) Burdette; sister, Donna (Ronald) Ross; 19 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandson.
Hugh J. Dorrian
Funeral Mass for Hugh J. Dorrian, 90, who died Friday, Feb. 6 and served as auditor of the City of Columbus for 48 years, was celebrated Friday, Feb. 13 at Columbus St. Timothy Church.
Dorrian was appointed as auditor in September 1969 after the death of John Price, who was auditor at the time. Dorrian had run for election to the position in 1965 and lost, then was appointed city treasurer by City Council.
He went on to win 12 consecutive elections before announcing his retirement in 2017. A Democrat, he served under Democratic and Republican mayors and was known for his careful handling of city finances, allowing the city to remain in sound fiscal shape as it steadily grew.
He served on the finance and investment committee of the Diocese of Columbus under three bishops and received the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice medal from Pope St. John Paul II in 1992.
He received many awards for his work as treasurer, was inducted into the City of Columbus Hall of Fame in 2012 and had Dorrian Green Park in Columbus’ Franklinton neighborhood, where he grew up, named after him in 2018.
He was born in Wheeling, West Virginia on July 11, 1935 to Hugh and Anna (Flaherty) Dorrian. His family moved to Columbus when he was two years old and he graduated from Holy Family School and St. Charles Preparatory School. He served in the U.S. Army in Germany from 1954 to 1956, received a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting from Ohio State University in 1959 and was employed by Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Co. accountants before beginning his career with the city.
He was a charter member of St. Timothy Church, taught accounting classes for 22 years at Ohio State and was chosen as Irishman of the Year by the Shamrock Club of Columbus in 1973.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Janice (Flynn); sisters, Sister Mary Macrina Dorrian, RSM, Julia Hughes, Nora Dorrian and Margory Fadley; and brothers, Michael and John. Survivors include daughters, 10th Ohio District Appeals Court Judge Julia Dorrian (David Robinson), Margaret Lombardo and Mary (Dennis) Jeffrey; son, Hugh “Joe” (Po Yee}; sister, Mary Pulsinelli; five grandsons and five granddaughters.
