Samuel Byrd, a graduating senior at Chillicothe High School, was awarded the Thomas L. Smith Scholarship.

Byrd, who belongs to Chillicothe St. Mary Church, part of Our Lady, Queen of the Apostles Parish in Ross and Pike counties, intends to study pharmacy in college. He was taking classes at Ohio University’s Chillicothe branch campus.

He was involved in his parish youth group, The Well.

During his time at Chillicothe High School, he played soccer, was part of the National Honor Society and served as a school board student liaison. He played Ohio Galaxies club soccer, served as a youth soccer referee and was part of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

He also belonged to the Academy in Medicine, volunteered at Adena Hospital in Chillicothe and was a member of the Pickaway Ross Sports Medicine program.

He is also involved in the Keys to Success drug-free program, is a certified personal trainer and holds a Yellow Belt certification.
